RECALIBRATING WITH PSALM 119: Day 9 – ט Teth

Today’s Passage: Psalm 119:65-72

Hebrew Letter Focus: ט (Teth)

Meaning: “Clay” or “mud”

Symbolic Significance: Teth represents hidden good, like a potter working with clay, suggesting that what appears messy can be shaped into something beautiful.

Key Word Study

The word טוֹב (tov) appears repeatedly in this stanza, inviting us into a deeper understanding of what “good” really means. While English translations simply render it as “good,” tov in Hebrew describes something that perfectly fulfills its purpose. When God called creation “good,” He was declaring its perfect fitness for His intentions. Here, the psalmist uses tov to describe both God’s actions (v.65) and the unexpected benefit of affliction (v.71). This reveals a profound truth: God’s “good” often doesn’t match our initial definition. The word appears five times in this stanza alone, creating a powerful meditation on how God’s goodness works even through difficult circumstances to accomplish His purposes in our lives. When the psalmist declares that it was “good” for him to be afflicted, he’s recognizing God’s purposeful shaping of his life.

Today’s Theme: The Hidden Gift of Hardship

This stanza presents one of Scripture’s most counterintuitive truths: affliction can be a pathway to deeper understanding of God’s Word. The progression moves from acknowledging God’s good dealings (v.65) through a season of wandering (v.67) to the surprising discovery that affliction has served as a teacher (v.71).

The psalmist doesn’t minimize suffering but rather reveals its unexpected purpose in God’s hands. Before his affliction, he went astray; through it, he learned obedience. This isn’t about glorifying suffering but about recognizing God’s redemptive work even in our hardest seasons.

Personal Application

  1. What difficult circumstances might God be using to shape your character?
  2. How has adversity deepened your understanding of God’s Word?
  3. What current challenge could you reframe as an opportunity for growth?

Prayer Focus

  • Praise: For God’s ability to work good through all circumstances
  • Confession: Our resistance to God’s shaping work in our lives
  • Request: For eyes to see God’s purposes in our challenges

Today’s Declaration

“Even in affliction, I trust Your good purposes and welcome Your teaching.”

  • Action Step: Write down one current challenge and identify possible ways God might be using it for growth

We’re now seeing how the foundational truths from week one are being tested and deepened through various aspects of life experience. This particular day connects our creation with our comprehension, showing how understanding God’s Word is part of fulfilling our created purpose.

God has granted me the honor of being adopted as one of His sons and of serving His people as a Bible teacher and Biblical counselor. My primary area of counseling expertise is often referred to as "high-end" counseling: survivors of trauma and abuse, especially childhood sexual abuse, church abuse, narcissistic abuse, domestic oppression, sex-trafficking, kidnapping, and sole-survivor counseling. As a survivor myself, God uses my own healing journey to help bring hope and healing to others (a la 2 Cor. 1:3-4). Abuse and oppression are NEVER okay with God! When it comes to oppression and abuse, there is no "Switzerland," no neutral territory - you either side with the oppressor or with the oppressed; there is no middle ground.
